Porreca, Camillo (b. 3 JUL 1877, d. 11 MAR 1944)
Note: He was baptized on 3 Jul 1877 in San Giacomo Apostolo, TorricellaPeligna. Godfather was Thomas Giovani DeCecco. Camillo was a farmer inTorricella. He lived at his father's (Angelo) home on Stazzo deiCavalli in the Contrada Sologna della Taverna area of Torricella. Hefirst arrived in Philadelphia at the age of 15, having embarked fromNaples on the ship S. Giorgio which arrived in New York on April 20,1893, Manifest ID # 82313. The manifest indicates he was notliterate, and traveled Steerage. His father, Angelo, had arrived sevenmonths earlier.
Returning at some point to Torricella, Camillo Porreca and his spouseCamilla Teti emigrated to the United States, 29 Jan 1903 arriving atEllis Island 11 Feb 1903 aboard the ship TRAVE which departed fromNaples, Campania, Italy on 29 January 1903 to visit (per manifest) hiscousin Vincenzo Porreca at 820 1st Avenue Phila. Also appearing nextto them on the ship's manifest are the names Nicola Ficca (16 yearsold) and his uncle Vincenzo Ficca (35 years old) - likely these arerelatives of Camillo's mother Rosa Ficca; Nicola Ficca is visiting hisfather Panteleone in Phila (address unclear). While Vincenzo Ficca isvisiting his uncle Vincenzo Ambrosio (probably should be D'Ambrosio)at 731 Fitzwater St Phila.. Camillo's name is misspelled "Parrera" onthe manifest.
He was a coal miner in Hazelton, PA, an elevator operator at the DrakeHotel in Philadelphia, and may have worked on the railroads in hisearlier trip to America. He also worked at Breyers Ice Cream plant inPhiladelphia. In the 1920 Philadelphia Census records, Camillo, hiswife Camilla and their eight children at the time are shown living at1224 Catherine St. He resided at 1326 Morris St. from about 1927 onin Phila, PA. According to an earlier record, at the time of hismarriage he lived at 731 Fitzwater St.- perhaps this was a boardinghouse as this address appears as a destination for many immigrants.(Note: 731 Fitwater St later became the site of James Campbell School, and as of 2001 it is a public park area). Per his son Bill, his fatherCamillo played the accordion, and he spoke English before he came toAmerica. Camillo died March 11, 1944 in Phila, at age 67.
My Uncle Bill has recently given me a "Duplicate Copy" of Camillo's"Naturalization Certificate". This duplicate states it was obtained onAugust 5, 1941, and that Camillo was naturalized by the Common PleasCourt in Sunbury, PA Northumberland County on Oct 9, 1905. My guessis the duplicate was obtained in order to apply fro Social Securitybenefits.

An email dated June 19, 2006 from Albert, the son of Luigi (Camillo'sbrother), says that Camillo lived in a house in the 700 block of N.Vine Stree in Hazelton, PA. See source email.

Subject: RE: Family Tree
Hi Cousin,
I have some info, and I am working on getting some pictures. I
spoke with my sisters this past weekend. They remember Hazelton. They
siad my mom Lillian live next door to Camillo family and they had
porches in front of the houses. This was the family Everson who
adopted my mom from the father who had to give her up cause he was
poor. So my dad lived in Philadelphia and would come to Hazelton to
see his brother and that is how my dad met my mom. My sister said when
they went to Hazelton. They remember going inside Camillo 's house and
seeing a picture they thought was dad, but it was Camillo. They said
they looked like twins. I spoke with my grand neice Tina's daughter
and she said that she even went to try and see the houses, address is
in the 700's and on N. Vine street. She also confirmed her mom's name
was Serpentina. She also had a strane middle name but it was not
Florentina.
Also my mom Lillian Birthdate was April 15, 1903.
This has been so interesting finding out all this info.
