allora lui dovrà dare l’approvazione dopo averlo studiato. Sicuramente

Church of San Giacomo Apostolo
As already reported in April, the Region
of Abruzzo has earmarked 70,000 euros to restructure the roof of the church
of San Giacomo Apostolo. We noted to Father Peppino that the parish records are deteriorating due to the winter cold. He said he plans to move these records to a room where a kerosene heating system was in use, outside the sacristy. In that way one can consult the records without interfering with religious functions. In fact, the church is now heated with natural gas, and so the kerosene furnace is no longer needed. The whole room can be cleared out. It will be convenient, isolated and heated during the winter. Related to this issue, the bishop has given his approval to microfilm the records (i.e., digital copies). Meanwhile, the Superintendent of Fine Arts, in possession of the plans and the documentation related to the previous project to reinforce the church, undertaken from 1984 to 1990, has begun a new study on the cracks that have appeared. A geologist has been hired to perform a series of tests on the soil and the foundations of the church to determine what sort of reinforcement work should now be performed. Church of San Antonio On the first of June the small church of San Antonio di Padova (St. Anthony of Padua) will finally be reopened to the faithful, in time for the feast of St. Anthony on June 13th. Still needed are 10,000 euros to pay the bank loan that was obtained to perform the work. However, once the church is reopened, surely enough funds will be collected from the members of the community to pay this off. Sports Field The English in Torricella For some months now something interesting
has been occurring in Torricella. Two real estate agents, one in Pescara and
one in Francavilla al Mare, are buying old country houses for English
clients, not just those that are habitable, but also ones that need to be
rebuilt. In recent years the Germans and the English have invaded Italy, in
particular Tuscany and Umbria, buying up farm houses wherever they can. They
rebuild them and turn them into country lodges to accommodate those who are
fond of vacations in the country or in solitude. Now they have arrived in
Abruzzo and are making their way to Torricella where they are looking
primarily for isolated houses surrounded by land. The English also pay well,
and so many are happy with this potential increase in house sales and summer
tourism. I went to the town hall to congratulate Graziano Zacchigna, the mayor who was reelected to a second term, but he was not in. I met rather the Vice-mayor, Elio Porreca. He invited me into his new office, and I congratulated him on behalf of the staff of the website and myself. I invited the administration to utilize our site to send out news on council deliberations. He said he was very interested in the idea and that something could be arranged. I asked him if there was an email address we could use to ask about the affairs of the communal administration. For the moment he gave his address and said he was willing to respond to any questions. He also said that besides being vice-mayor, he is responsible for tourism and culture. Therefore, he is very enthusiastic about our website project, and if we have any cultural initiatives in mind, he would like to hear about them and discuss them.
The restoration work completed on the first floor of what is to become a Benedictine Monastery. Work continues on the second floor and roof. |
