Associazione Musicale “Vincent Persichetti”

E’ nata una nuova associazione, un’associazione musicale che si chiamerà: Associazione Musicale “Vincent Persichetti”. Avrà due sedi, una a Falconara Marittima, in provincia di Ancona ed una a Torricella Peligna. L’inaugurazione della sede di Falconara avverrà con molta probabilità nella prima domenica di dicembre 2008; mentre la sede di Torricella, in via delle Coste, 68, sarà inaugurata la prossima estate 2009.

L’associazione si prefigge di far conoscere in Italia Vincent Persichetti, questo grande musicista, compositore e teorico di armonia americano del novecento e per farlo organizzerà iniziative culturali, musicali, concerti, conferenze, mostre, ed anche corsi di chitarra, pianoforte o altri strumenti.

Tutto nasce il giorno in cui Rosanna Persichitti, residente a Falconara Marittima ma di origini torricellane (è la figlia di Marziale Persichitti di iaquieie), appassionata di musica come suo padre che cantava e suonava la fisarmonica, leggendo una enciclopedia musicale, ha scoperto che in America vi era stato un grande compositore di musica che portava il suo stesso cognome. Ha quindi iniziato una ricerca per indagare la provenienza e la sorpresa è stata grande quando ha scoperto che il padre di Vincent era nato a Torricella. Nientemeno. Quindi poteva essere anche un suo lontano parente.

Allora ha fatto una ricerca genealogica ed è venuta in possesso del certificato di nascita del padre: Si trattava di Vincenzo Nicola Ruggiero, nato il 17 febbraio del 1885 al n° 8 di Via del Municipio a Torricella Peligna da Domenico Persichitti di Vincenzo, calzolaio, e Rachele Di Berardino, cucitrice. Pare che Domenico fosse un musicista, ma lui non partì per l’America e decise di rimanere a Torricella.

Dopo l’infanzia trascorsa nel paese, nel 1897, Vincent Roger (così poi si chiamerà in America), appena dodicenne, si imbarcò per gli States a cercar “fortuna” come tanti italiani. Siccome era piccolo si aggregò a Vincenzo Porreca, un altro torricellano emigrante. Non si sa bene se era un parente o conoscente.

Come tanti altri torricellani partiti nelle prime ondate di emigrazione a cavallo fra l’ottocento e il novecento, andò anche lui ad abitare a Filadelfia, a casa di uno zio, Francesco Di Berardino. Nel 1914 sposò Martha, una signora di origine tedesca con cui ebbe tre figli. Il primo nacque il 6 giugno del 1915 e lo chiamarono Vincent Ludwig, che poi sarebbe diventato un grande musicista.

Vincent Ludwig visse e operò per tutta la vita a Filadelfia. Si racconta che era piccolo di statura ma con una testa leggermente più grande, che si evidenziava. Fu un bambino prodigio, le prime lezioni di piano le prese a 5 anni, poi studiò anche l'organo e il contrabbasso. Più tardi apprese la teoria musicale e la composizione. Giovanissimo mantenne economicamente la propria istruzione alle scuole superiori, ora suonando l'organo in chiesa, ora lavorando come musicista nelle orchestre o facendo l'accompagnatore nelle trasmissioni radiofoniche. Fu anche un valente scultore.

A 20 anni ottenne la cattedra di teoria e composizione, nel frattempo studiò direzione d'orchestra e pianoforte. Nel 1941 ottenne il diploma e nel 1945 il dottorato a Filadelfia, e la cattedra alla Juilliard School di New York dove ebbe numerosi allievi, in seguito divenuti affermati compositori.

La sua origine italiana la evidenziava in numerose interviste e spesso amava ricordare che il paese di origine di suo padre aveva dato i natali anche al nonno di Vincenzo Bellini.

Morì a Filadelfia all’età di 72 anni il 14 agosto del 1987.

La sua produzione musicale è stata enorme, per chi vuole saperne di più basta fare una ricerca su Internet per trovare innumerevoli siti a lui dedicati che parlano della sua musica.

Ha scritto più di 166 lavori, inclusi 8 sinfonie ed una opera.

Come abbiamo detto l'inaugurazione della sede di Falconara Marittima ci sarà con molta probabilità la 1° domenica di dicembre. Sarà invitata anche una delegazione di Torricella con il sindaco e l’assessore al turismo.

L'inaugurazione si articolerà in vari momenti:

· ci sarà una presentazione generica su come è nata l’associazione e che cosa si prefigge

· ci sarà un relatore, un professore del Conservatorio Musicale G. Rossini di Pesaro, che parlerà della vita del compositore e soprattutto delle opere.

· ci sarà un momento di ascolto di brani per chitarra, pianoforte e brani cantati

· ci sarà la proiezione di un video

· poi, alla fine ci sarà ....il rinfresco.

La stessa presentazione sarà ripetuta la prossima estate a Torricella.

A new Association is formed, a music association that will be called the: “Vincent Persichetti” Music Association. It will have two headquarters, one in Falconara Marittima, in the province of Ancona and one in Torricella Peligna. The inauguration of the site in Falconara in all probability will take place on the first Sunday in December 2008, whilst that in Torricella, at 68, Via delle Coste, will be inaugurated next summer, 2009.

The association has set itself the target of making Vincent Persichetti known in Italy. He was a great musician, composer, and master of theory and harmony in America in the twentieth century. They also plan to organise cultural activities, music, concerts, conferences, exhibitions; also to organise courses of guitar, piano and other instruments.

It all began on the day when Rosanna Persichetti, who lives at Falconara Marittima but originally is from Torricella was reading a music encyclopaedia and discovered that there was a great composer of music in America who had the same surname as she did. She is the daughter of Marziale Persichetti di iaquie and is a music enthusiast like her father, who used to sing and play the accordion. Therefore, she began to research where Vincent had come from and was immensely surprised to find that his father had been born in Torricella. Really! Thus, he could even be her distant relative.

So she carried out some genealogical research and found his father’s birth certificate: It belonged to Vincenzo Nicola Ruggiero Persichitti, born 17 February 1885 and he was born at number 8, Via del Municipio, Torricella Peligna son of Domenico Persichitti, son of Vincenzo, a shoemaker, and Rachele Di Berardino, a seamstress. It seems that Domenico was a musician, but he decided to stay in Torricella and did not go to America.

Vincent Roger (as he became known in America) had his childhood in the village then in 1897, at just twelve years of age, he embarked for America to seek his “fortune” as did so many Italians. Since he was so young, he joined Vincenzo Porreca, another Torricellan emigrant. It is not clear whether this was a relative or a friend.

As did so many other Torricellans, who left in the early waves of emigration between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, he too went to live in Philadelphia, at the home of his uncle, Francesco Di Berardino. In 1914 he married Martha, a lady of German origin, and they had three children. The first was born on 6 June 1915, they called him Vincent Ludwig, and he became the great musician.

Vincent Ludwig lived and worked all his life in Philadelphia. It is told that he was of short stature but had a rather noticeably large head. He was a child prodigy; he enrolled in Music College[1] at the age of five and then also studied organ and double bass. Later he studied music theory and composition. As a youth, he supported himself financially, paying his fees at senior school, sometimes by playing the organ in Church, sometimes working as a musician in the orchestra or as the accompanist for radio programmes. He was also a skilled sculptor.

At the age of 20, he became Head of the Theory and Composition Departments at the College, and studied conducting and piano. He earned his Masters in 1941 and then his Doctorate in 1945, both in Philadelphia. A couple of years later he became Professor at the Juilliard School in New York, where he had many pupils, who became well-known composers.

He pointed out his Italian origin during numerous interviews and often loved to recall that his father’s village of origin was also the birthplace of Vincenzo Bellini’s grandfather.

He died in Philadelphia at the age of 72 on 14 August 1987.

His production of music was enormous. If you wish to know more, search the Internet and you will find many sites dedicated to him and his music.

He wrote over 166 works, including 8 symphonies and one Opera.

As mentioned, the inauguration in Falconara Marittima will most likely take place on the first Sunday in December. A delegation from Torricella will be invited including the Mayor and the Councillor for Tourism.

The opening will consist of various stages:

· there will be a generic presentation telling how the Association began and outlining its aims

· there will be a speaker, a Professor from the Music Conservatory G. Rossini of Pesaro, who will speak about the composer’s life and his works.

· there will be a time for listening to excerpts for guitar, piano and song

· a video will be shown

· then, at the end, there will be…. refreshments.

This same presentation will be repeated next summer in Torricella.

[1] The Combs College of Music is a defunct music school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

It was founded as the Combs Broad Street Conservatory of Music in 1885 by Gilbert Raynolds Combs, and closed in 1991, due to loss of government funding and decreasing enrolment. During its 106 years in operation, the school enjoyed a reputation as one of the foremost institutions of its kind in the country. Notables such as William Kincaid, Carl Torrello, and Arturo Toscanini were associated with the school. It was one of the pioneers in the field of music therapy as well as a hotbed of innovation in the field of music education.

Vincent Persichetti, who had enrolled there at the age of five, was one of its most notable alumni –and at the age of 20 he became a teacher there too, Head of Theory and Composition.
