La Festa di Sant'Antonio Abate

   Il 17 gennaio ( ieri ) è stata la festa di Sant'Antonio Abate,  Questa ricorrenza a Torricella è stata sempre ricordata. Sant'Antonio Abate è l'immagine di un santo poverello , un santo della gente povera, dei contadini, è il protettore degli animali, principalmente dei maiali. Il 17 gennaio inizia anche il periodo di carnevale ed a Torricella, come credo in tanti altri posti del centro sud d'Italia, si faceva, e qualche volta si fa ancora, la rappresentazione, un pò sacra ed un pò profana, del "Sandandonje".

Una decina di persone, alcuni vestiti da frati, due da angeli e poi uno vestito da diavolo e l'altro da S'Antonio Abate, oltre ai musicanti con la chitarra e la fisarmonica, vanno in giro per il paese di casa in casa. Entrati nella sala o nella cucina della casa ospite iniziano la rappresentazione della leggenda di come S'Antonio nel deserto sfugge al diavolo. Le parole e la musica vengono tramandati di generazione in generazione. Ultimamente l'organizzatore e prim'attore è Marziale D'Ulisse. Io mi ricordo che molte volte il diavolo lo faceva Peppe di cannone, con il mantello rosso , le corna in testa e la faccia e le mani dipinti di nero.
Entrati nella casa si disponevano a semicerchio e cominciavano a cantare ed a recitare.Il tutto durava una ventina di minuti. Alla fine della recita c'era la canzone
" Santantonio accette tutto pure l'osso di lu presutto",ossia si chiedeva al padrone di casa di fare la questua e si sarebbe accettato qualsiasi cosa " anche l'osso del prosciutto". A quel punto il padrone di casa tirava fuori il vino per un bicchiere ciascuno , poi prendeva un po di grano ( questo molto tempo fa), un po di prosciutto ,oppure delle uova e delle salsicce,e raramente anche qualche soldo e lo dava al frate con il sacco e così dopo il ringraziamento al padrone di casa si proseguiva a bussare nella casa successiva. Alla fine della serata già tutti un po brilli si andavano a dividere oppure a mangiare il risultato della questua.

Certo nei tempi in cui la miseria si toccava con mano,la rappresentazione era un modo per mangiare qualcosa di sostanzioso in un periodo dell'anno molto magro e , il grano ma principalmente le uova e le salsicce avevano il loro valore sostanziale, adesso per fortuna non si ha più bisogno di raccimolare le salsicce o le uova per mangiare e la rappresentazione, quando si fa , si fa per mantenere viva la tradizione un pò per divertimento .

The Feast of Sant'Antonio Abate

The 17^th January (yesterday) was the feast of Sant'Antonio Abate (St. Anthony the Abbot). This date is always remembered in Torricella. Sant'Antonio Abate is the epitome of a poor man, a saint of the poor and of peasants, the protector of animals, especially pigs. The 17^th January also starts the period of Carnival, and in Torricella, as I believe in many other places of the centre-south of Italy, they used to perform a religious play, partly sacred and also a little profane, called the ""Sandandonje" and sometimes it is still performed.

About ten people, some dressed as friars, two as angels, one dressed as the devil and another as S. Antonio Abate. plus musicians with a guitar and an accordion, go around the town from house to house. When they enter the living room or the kitchen of the host's house they begin the performance of the story, telling how Sant'Antonio flees from the devil in the desert. The words and music are handed down from generation to generation. Latterly, the organizer and lead actor has been Marziale D' Ulisse. I remember that many times the devil was played by Peppe "di cannone", with a red cloak, horns on his head, and his face and hands painted black. When they enter the house, they arrange themselves in a semicircle and begin to sing and act. The whole thing lasts about twenty minutes. At the end of the performance there was the song "Santantonio accetta tutto pure l'osso di lu presutto" (Sant'Antonio accepts anything, even the pig’s ham-bone); that is, they asked the head of the household for a collection, and they were prepared to accept anything "even the ham-bone". At that point the head of the household set out the wine, a glass for everyone, then took some grain (this happened a very long time ago), a little ham, or eggs and sausages, and very occasionally also some money and gave it to the monk with the bag. Then, after thanking the head of the household, they would continue by knocking at the next house. At the end of the evening, all by now a little drunk, they went away to divide up, or to eat, the fruits of their begging.

Surely, during times of hardship, the play was a way to be able to get something substantial to eat, at a time of the year which was very "lean". The grain and, especially the eggs and the sausages had considerable value. Now, fortunately, there is no longer a need to beg for sausages or eggs in order to eat, and the play, when it is performed, is done to keep tradition alive and also for enjoyment.
