The Corso at Torricella

Finally they have started the repairs to adjust the sidewalks and the road bed on the Corso Umberto I.
It had been talked about for a very long time, starting back when Davide Piccoli was the Mayor.
The works for both the sidewalks and the road are being financed and directed by the Province of Chieti, to whom the management of the roads belongs (Strada Provinicale Peligna) (Provincial Peligna Roads) whilst the Commune of Torricella will also participate with the sidewalks and the drains, damaged by subsidence. For now only the work on the road bed has begun, which needs to be lowered and reshaped, and then they’ll begin work on the sidewalks in the Spring.
This Summer  there has been a lot of talk and discussion about the project to sort out the beginning part of Viale Raffaele Paolucci.  Many people disagreed with changing the structure of the Corso – Viale – Pineta, considered as being a single line, like Torricella’s architectural backbone. One Torricellan lady who lives in Rome, Gabriella Porreca, collected about seventy signatures on a letter against the project that she took to the Mayor.
Engineer Martinelli, who is studying the idea of the ex-administration, says the project only deals with sorting out the area between the road, the ex-hotel La Pineta, the Town Hall and the “Marzocco” house. They want to move the row of pine trees on the edge of the road, reclaim the small square which at the moment is a sort of car park, build a porch onto the neighbouring wall of the ex-hotel La Pineta, furnish a square with benches, linking it with the area near the Town Hall where a monument will be built for AVIS (Associazione Volontari Italiani del Sangue) (Association of Voluntary Italian Blood Donors). For the moment, however, it is only in the study phase, and when the plan has been finalised it will be presented to the public to decide whether there is a consensus for it or not.

Other arguments that have been under discussion include the choice of the new paving to replace the asphalt blocks, there was a rumour, later proved to be false, about narrowing the width of the sidewalks and finally about changing the trees along the Corso for others, more beautiful and more suitable. For now nothing has been decided. In the Spring, when the work begins, we shall know more details about it all. It is necessary to say, however, that these discussions are very dear to Torricellans, both those who live there and those who only come back in the Summer-time. Many people like Torricella just as it is. Also the choice of white limestone for the new steps in the Pinewood (Pineta) did not please a lot of people and so they don’t want the same thing to happen with the sidewalks and the path. Everyone wants to know about it in order to discuss it and to reach a democratic solution.

Staremo a vedere.

The Church Roof

Architect Enzo D’Ambrosio had agreement from the Architectural Superintendent’s Office (Soprintendenza ai beni architettonici) and therefore Don Giuseppe, Torricella’s Parish Priest, was able to begin the restoration work for the roof of the Church of San Giacomo Apostolo. The building firm “Taddeo Donato” is carrying it out. The beams have already been put up and the hollow flat tiles for setting on the roof. During this work they noticed that the roof of the apse was broken too, which is why it was so damp inside the church, behind the main altar. Moreover the scaffolding erected for repairing the broken roof allowed them also to go and look at the other points corresponding to internal dampness. The situation is fairly serious. Unfortunately the funds are lacking to repair it all and if the Abruzzo Region does not freely bestow those 70,000 € that were promised last year by the previous Junta, the work will have to be halted. It seems that there is some hope. We’ll have to wait and see.

The AVIS Monument

On November 21st 2005 the Monument to AVIS (Associazione Volontari Italiani del Sangue) (Association of Voluntary Italian Blood Donors) will be inaugurated. This monument was the great desire of Gabriele Piccone di papanarde, and of the members of the Association in Torricella; it consists of a crown-shaped bench and a raised zone where there will be a fountain and a bronze statue of a lady, it was designed by Elio Garis, an artist of International fame from Cuneo, married to a Torricellan. This monument will be placed where the small gushing fountain is now near the Town Hall, it will be built by the firm Di Luzio from Colle Zingaro and will be officially opened on the fifteenth anniversary of the founding of the Torricellan section of AVIS. A plaque bearing the name of Don Ignazio Cocco will be placed on the base of the monument to remind us of our section’s founder.

The almost completed roof of the Monastery

The Benedictine Monastery at Riga Tre Confini

On 21st October Don Giustino Rossi was really happy, finally the Monastery began to take shape, Little more than a year after beginning the work, they had closed the roof. They had begun by consolidating the foundations and walls, then they built the floors and finally they reached the roof.
Last year, when the house that had belonged to his father was totally in ruins it had been almost impossible to imagine it how it is now. Now the structure is apparent and the Benedictine Monk’s great tenacity is to be admired, for, with nothing but the help of Providence in the guise of funding from people of good will, in a very short time he has been able to restore the building, giving it life; soon, if all goes well, it will welcome monks and lay people followers of  Saint Benedict’s Rule.

On the outside they still need to put in the window-frames and plaster the stones facing the walls. Once the scaffolding wrapped around the house comes down, they will make the drainage system to carry away external water and then they can work on the interior. Don Giustino told me that they  spent 50,000 € just on the roof – and adding up all the bills so far, they have spent about 200,000 €. Now the coffers are empty. If they don’t get some new finance they will have to stop building. As usual, he doesn’t give in, he is certain that something will happen. It is in this regard that he asks that anyone who
reads this article and who holds dear this project, should contribute an offering towards it.
