Dolce paese
io ti vorrei cantare e non so come.

Sweet Village
Sweet village, my sweet village
Hugging the hillside with few houses
A large Corso, just two or three Churches
A fountain which goes quiet in the evening.
The fountain reawakens in the morning
As soon as the sea gives itself a rosy hue
And the hill seems to arise
And the Maiella dresses like a bride.
Sweet little house, my sweet little house
Where my wife takes her time over the housework
Where our children study in great haste
In order to run in the golden fields.
I don’t know if I shall often return here to the mountaintop
Because the city will keep me far away
But I shall certainly remain what I was before
And I shall hear this mysterious call.
Sweet village, my sweet village
Where those of my name rest in peace
Where the dialect still sounds polite
I would like to sing to you and I don’t know how.
I have written a few verses in the olden style
Like the verses once used in the schools
When the teacher with a friendly manner
Taught us by rhyming the words.
When I shall be far away and old
I shall miss your poor churches…
And the empty countryside and the burnt log
Of your hearths, sweet village. |
