La voce dei secoli
La bisaccia e la fiasca
– il pane e il vino –
il sole e le spighe[1]
– il calice e la corona –
e l’acqua del torrente
– candore trasparente –
finché la voce dei secoli
mantiene gli animi
finché il dolore dei secoli
pervade i campi.
La bisaccia col pane scuro
– solitudine e sudore oscuro –
la fiasca col vino rosato
– dolcezza e sangue immacolato –
e degli uomini l’affanno
risucchiato anno per anno
e ridonato fra i rovi al sole
in spiga lucente vibrante armoniosa
metallica come
un’arìsta[2]
d’oro.

The Voice of the Centuries
The haversack and the flask
– The bread and the wine –
The sun and the ears of corn
– The chalice and the crown –
And water from the stream
– Transparent candour
As long as the voice of the centuries
Guards our souls
As long as the pain of the centuries
Fills the fields.
The haversack with dark bread
– Solitude and obscure sweat –
The flask with Rosé wine
– Sweetness and immaculate blood –
And the breathlessness of men
Swallowed up year by year
And given back amongst the brambles in the sun
In shining ears of corn, vibrating harmoniously
Metallic like
A golden ear of corn.
