Alla “Ripa” di
Agnone* certe sere
Rivivo il dolore antico
che dalle sommità lunghe dei monti
si raccoglie in questa brevità di piano
come sangue denso; poi si discioglie
e come sangue vivo si dirama
che vene sotto la terra vada disegnando.
Parvenze di un passaggio drammatico
si torcono si scolorano
si ritrovano si raggruppano
si allontanano alfine impallidendo.
Evanescenti sotto l’argentea luna

* Nota d’Autore:
Altre note:
[*]Agnone - Capitale naturale dell'Alto Molise, (850 mt. s.l.m. in
Legio Linteata. I Sanniti furono guerrieri valorosi e ben organizzati.
e 300 cavallarie”. Una coorte consisteva di 300-600 uomini.

At the “Crags” of
Agnone*
Certain Evenings
I relive the ancient pain
That from the long mountain summits
Is gathered in this brevity of a plain
Like dense blood; then it dissolves
And like living blood it spreads out
And it sketches out veins beneath the earth.
Semblances of a dramatic passage
Twist and discolour
Find themselves again and regroup
In the end they go away growing dim.
Fading beneath the pale blue moon
That has conquered the golden heat of the stars.

* Author’s Note:
Even if the terrible oath of the “Linteate Legion” of the Samnites did
not take place, as many maintain, at the “Crags” of Agnone, it is easy
to imagine the passage of a civilisation at this place in Molise that
ended dramatically with a yearning for freedom.
Further notes:
[1] Agnone – Capital town of the High Molise (Province of Isernia)
population over 6,000, situated on a ridge above the Verrino valley at
850 metres above sea level; has high plains and vast pastoral lands. It
has a large hinterland that lies at various levels from 450 m to 1600 m.
The Linteate Legion was formed of a chosen group of valorous and well-organised
warriors; they worshipped Gods of the Samnitic Olympus and after a
special holy ceremony in 293 BC they became a caste dedicated to the
extreme sacrifice (of giving their own lives) in order to defend their
people. Archaeological findings of recent years have verified the words
of Tito Livio, (Livy, Roman historian, 64 or 59 BC - AD 17), who wrote
of the sacred ritual of 293 BC of Aquilonia, which was made on the
formation of the “Legio Linteata” in his Annals:
“…. these men (the Samnites) were prepared for war with much commitment
and a great wealth of glittering weapons; and they also called on their
Gods to help them, since these soldiers had already been initiated into
the military by taking an oath according to an ancient rite, and a levy
had been made of all of Samnium with a new law, by virtue of which any
of the young men who did not rush to their commandants’ call, and who
left without carrying out orders, had to be consecrated to the vendetta
of Jove. then all the army received the order to gather at Aquilonia.
60,000 men mustered there, the flower of the military who were
Samnites.”
These Samnites sacrificed men and beasts to their many Gods and had
links with Celtic and Druid priests/ceremonies. Worshiping gods for the
Samnites was the element of tribal unity. Religion was important to
assist them in the aspects of daily life. They did not share an
“Olympus”, yet most of the gods were worshipped by all of the Samnites.
During times of war, all soldiers were united by a holy oath, never
violated, so much was the faith in which they believed.
Legion - From Latin legio, legionis "a body of soldiers numbering 10
cohorts and 300 cavalry". A cohort comprised 300-600 men.
