Poi tutti in sala.

A soldier of the Second World War - known unto God".

The Feast of Saint Martin (San Martino)

(see below a message from Carlo Liberati with another account of the feast)

The Feast of Saint Martin’s, together with All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, is an autumn feast much awaited by the people. In our zone it is a whole ensemble of rites: it is a religious festival, of that the much venerated Saint, who lived in Medieval times as a hermit between Casoli and Lama dei Peligna, who gave his name to such places as the village of Fara San Martino and the Gorge of San Martino; there is an important meteorological term - “Saint Martin’s Summer”; it is a peasants’ date linked to wine “at Saint Martin’s all must becomes wine”, but even more, it is an amusing pagan recurrence in which many villages celebrate the famous “Feast of the Cuckolds (Horned)”. The methods of celebrating this feast vary from town to town. The most important feast in Italy takes place in San Valentino in the province of Pescara, in Venice, Ruviano and in Anguillara. For example, in this town in Lazio (Latium), the last bridegroom of the year is carried around the whole town in a procession and he is mocked and ridiculed. The tradition is different in each locality. In all of them, however, there is teasing of those husbands who, according to rumour, are being betrayed by their wives. It seems that the name originates from the fact that in many areas they used to have the Animal Fair, mainly of cows & bulls, hence the horns, and thus the feast of the horned (the cuckolded), hence metaphorically it became a feast of ridicule and irony towards cuckolded husbands.

Even in Torricella on the eve of Saint Martin’s, that is the evening of 10th November, this feast was celebrated (I use the past tense because for the last twenty years it has not been celebrated) and by tradition several youths with a bundle of old tins, “chamber pots”, tin kitchen equipment, all tied together with wire, which they dragged through the streets during the evening, beginning about nine or ten and carrying on until late, causing noise and good cheer. The course depended on who they wanted to tease, that is the direction depended on which way to the house of the husband they thought was “cuckolded”. Then they would go from one cuckold to the next as they went around the village.

They used to arrive very quietly at the dwelling, tie a little cord to the door-knocker, they would hide nearby and then pull the cord to make it knock. Someone would come to the door to see who it was … “Who’s there?” and the youths would reply “SAN MARTINO” and run away dragging the “cioccoli” making the husband angry because they were teasing him, and he would be shouting from his window, cursing the youths who had goaded him. (“Cioccolo” in Torricellan is a useless object of no value, fit only to be thrown away.  In this case, it mainly involves cans, drums, metal containers, lids and other items chiefly made of metal because the greatest enjoyment came from making a lot of noise whilst dragging these chains of tins and scraps.)

This year, the new Administration, lead by the Mayor, Tiziano Teti, wanted to revive this old typically Torricellan tradition (on the Internet I have tried to dig out any other places where they have a similar tradition but I could not find anything).

They announced a type of competition (see the poster) and they asked young people to take part. This was definitely not a “feast of the cuckolded” with derision towards some unlucky fellow, like we told you about, but rather more simply a parade of the “Cioccoli”. The response was far better than predicted.

There were about ten bundles, full of large tins, sheets of metal, shutters etc., each needing three or four youths to pull. It began at about half past nine and went on until midnight. They went to all parts of the village, from the Pinewood to the Corso, from below the Church to the Calacroce neighbourhood, from the Church to the Tower, and down the hill as far as Saint Antonio’s, then up to the Corso again as far as the roundabout, which they ran around several times at high speed. At the end, they went towards the Town Hall’s Garage where the rubbish truck was awaiting them, its doors open to swallow up all the “cioccoli”.

Eliano Ficca and Piero Rossi – The Coffin of the Cuckold – First prize for the most creative

In addition, there was a large crowd, at least 200 people followed from start to finish, applauding right up to the final phase at the roundabout. It seemed as if it were one of those summer evenings, even though it was bitterly cold. The sky was clear but there was a north wind that bit your ears off.

At the end of the parade, the Administration invited everyone to the Nursery School hall, for the prize giving, it was a lovely large and welcoming room, where other boys and girls had prepared roast chestnuts, new wine, sausages and “bruschette” (toasted bread covered with olive oil, garlic and tomatoes), without sparing the cost. The team classified as the most creative won a leg of ham, the noisiest one won a live cockerel, and two 50 Euro vouchers were given to the youngest and the oldest teams. To complete the news, the ham quite justly was given to both the team of Fausto Teti, Daniele D’Ulisse and Mario Di Luzio, and to that of Eliano Ficca and Piero Rossi; the live cockerel went to the team of Nicola Di Francesco, Mattia Ficca, Domenico Ottobrini and Giovanni D’Amico; the 50 Euro vouchers went to Giorgia Teti and Benedetta Di Falco as the youngest and to Michele Gentile, Antonio Di Luzio and Francesco Ficca as the oldest.

When I think about that deafening noise that filled the silence of the night, getting louder and louder, then slowly drifting away again, I recall how fantastic it was.  Definitely an excellent rediscovery, one to be worked on to make it an annual appointment. Maybe with some adjustments, for example organising in various parts of the village corners from which to offer roast chestnuts and wine. Not at the school like this year, but in four or five more characteristic places: at the Calacroce neighbourhood, the Coste, on the Corso, and at Saint Antonio’s. It would really be a great Festa that would attract ever so many guests from the entire region.

It would be an original celebration, captivating and fantastic. An occasion not to be missed.

The Sports Association

This year is the first time that Torricella Peligna, the football team, has played in the First Division. They always used to play in the third or the second. Thanks to last season’s great championship, this year they are in the superior category, the First Amateurs - and they are proving that they really deserve it. After eight matches they top the league with 18 points, they won 5, tied 3 and have lost none. In a newspaper covering Regional News, I read the other day that now “Torricella is no longer a surprise but a great reality”. Sportsmen are following each transfer. Giuseppe Teti di minnarelle, the president, said to me that, when they went to play at Tollo, there were more Torricellans there than people from Tollo.

The Sports Association is proud not only of the first team, now they have a team in four other categories, “Pulcini”, under 11 years old, “Esordienti“, under 13, “Allievi”, under 17, and “Primavera”, between 15 and 20, and they are all doing well.  The President related with pride that on Sunday 4th November, the “Pulcini” won against San Vito by 13 - 0, the “Allievi” won against Frisa by 2 – 1, and Torricella won against l’Altinese by 3 – 0.

We should recognise that in recent years, but especially last summer, the lower categories have undergone annexation: the Sports Clubs of Torricella, Gessopalena and Montenerodomo have joined together, creating a single, large football school. A movement has thus been created which will bring great benefit to all three villages, to all the children who play sports at “home” and to all the parents who can easily follow their children involved in this sport.

Activities of the Town Hall Administration

On 4th November, Armed Forces Day, during the commemoration of the fallen in all the wars, the Mayor, Tiziano Teti, re-laid the stone listing the names of 12 Torricellan soldiers lost in Russia. Originally, the stone went missing  during recent restoration works at the “monument”. Dr. Luciano Calabrese was present. He is the son of Cavalier Attilio Calabrese, who, when he was alive, did his utmost to obtain this stone in remembrance of these soldiers. Don Attilio also had the idea of promoting the Tower, Torricella’s other monument, dedicated to civilian victims of the Second World War.

On 19th November, the date expires for tenders to improve and recover the sports field situated behind the Pinewood. Presently there are two small tennis courts in very poor condition.

The plan provides for the construction of a multifunctional field, 40 x 20 metres, where they can play five-a-side football too, the building of a small building with a kitchen, two public toilets and new paving around the kiosk. It is planned that a new Manager will be in charge of the building, will maintain the efficiency of the sports fields , and he/she will have a license to sell drinks and to run a small refreshment facility. The basis of the contract is for 120,000 Euros.

Creating these fields bodes well for the new sporting scene in Torricella, for at the moment, with the activities of so many football teams, on some days there is nowhere for teams to train.

News Chronicle

The huge problems that currently are worrying all Italy with the ill-considered, unregulated influx of Romanians, are also being felt in our village. Last week there were two robberies. The first to suffer was Marziale Piccoli whose car, a Volkswagen, was stolen, together with some money, about 300 Euros that were in his wife’s handbag - these still have not been found. The thieves entered their apartment at night whilst they were asleep; the thieves had an East-European accent.

A few days later, another car was stolen, from Gianluigi Del Duca. This case, however, was resolved straight away. The following morning, the car, an Audi, was found near Termoli. The thieves did not stop at a Police block. Then probably due to fear, they abandoned the car. Then the Police traced the owner and called him,  but he was not even aware it had been stolen since it had just happened that night; he was able to go and get it back again straight away.

Monastery

As we have mentioned before, the Monastery was inaugurated on 12th July (see News of July).

Although it was inaugurated, there were still works not completed, some windows were without frames, and the entire upper floor needed to be finished. It was hoped that inflow of donations and offerings would continue, but since then they have practically ceased. The cold is coming and there is not even enough money to light the heating. Don Giustino does not complain, because, as he says, “you see this is what Providence wishes”.

The Parochial Church of San Giacomo Apostolo

It seems that work will soon begin on restoring the roof. About 120,000 Euro are expected from the Curia, taken from the 8 per thousand given to the Catholic Church.

Then they will need another sum of money, at least 150,000 Euros, to repair the cracks between the roof and behind the façade. These lesions are causing water seepage that is running down the stone façade and the wall behind it.

For these latter works, which are indispensable before the Church can be reopened, both the Town Hall Administration of Torricella and the Assessors of Public Works in Abruzzo are getting involved.

Let us hope that the finding of these funds and a definition of the work to be undertaken will soon be reached. One has the impression that if they wait any longer the lesions will increase and then everything will be even more difficult.

Ballarò

On Tuesday November 20th, from 21:00 until 23:00, in Rome, in a production hall of RAI (TV) in the historic headquarters on Via Teulada, there was an episode  of the programme Ballarò, a much valued, long running political programme, watched by interested television spectators. Our Edoardo Gentile also works for that programme. In particular, he organises the invitations to the public to attend the show. For the evening of the 20th, he had also invited many Torricellans, who replied with their usual enthusiasm. 18 of them turned up.
At 19:00 they were all ready in front of the side entrance of the television studios. There was the Mayor, Tiziano Teti, the Assessor for Tourism, Carmine Ficca and lots of others including Antonio Del Duca, Enzo Antrilli, Pantaleone Ficca and Alessandro Crivelli. A photo record was taken and then we went to the refreshments table for a buffet. At RAI they do things on a grand scale, they invite you to attend a programme, but they offer you rolls, drinks and pastries too. Then we all went into the hall. Edoardo had arranged for the Torricellans to enter first. The Mayor and some of the others had reserved seats on the front row, so they could easily be filmed by the telecameras.
The discussion amongst the politicians present was very interesting, in particular they talked about the fact of the day, namely about the new party announced by Berlusconi; then about mortgages with variable rates, which are creating so many problems in Italy too; and finally about the ridiculous compensation wanted by the Savoy family, who are demanding a refund for damages suffered because they have been in exile. The discussion, which at times was heated and at times ironic, was always very interesting and it ended around 23:00. Present were the Minister for Public Works, Di Pietro, the Minister for Sport, Giovanna Meandri, the Honourable Tabacci from the UDC, the Honourable Prestigiacomo from Forza Italia, the Director of Unità, Padellaro, and Bonanni,
the Secretary General of the CISL Union. It should be noted that Bonanni is a native of Bomba. Our Mayor went over to greet him and asked if it would be possible to have a group photo with him, together with the Torricellans present, and he was very happy to accept.
Then salutations were exchanged with those Torricellans who live in Rome and then everyone set off on the journey back to Torricella. . . . where they landed at around two thirty in the morning. It was a lovely evening to remember.

Message from Carlo Liberati, 12 November 2007:-

Last week I finally managed to go back to Torricella after the summer. On the journey during a beautiful sunny day, I saw all the fantastic autumn colours and also a fresh fall of snow that between Friday and Saturday whitened the High Plain of Cinque Miglie (Five Miles), the Majella and also the peaks around Torricella.

In the village, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that they had planned an event in which many participated, both young and old. As I went into the Teti Butchers’ shop, I read an announcement, publicising the “Parade of the Cioccoli” to be held on Saturday evening. So I asked the “first lady” (Concetta, the wife of Tiziano Teti, mayor and owner of Teti Butchers’ shop) to tell me more about it and she kindly explained that “the youths would have to drag through the streets these “cioccoli” all tied together…”. I had to interrupt her to tell her that the explanation was very clear, but that, since I am a “foreigner”, I simply did not know what these “Cioccoli” were! It seems that not only in Torricellan “cioccolo” stands for objects of low value, useless, fit for throwing away. In this case they are mainly tin cans oil drums, kegs, casks, lids and other items made of metal, because the principal enjoyment lies in the loud noise caused by dragging these “chains” of cioccoli. The loud noise was really frightful: it seemed that a derailed train was running towards the Corso or up on the Coste! It seems this is an old Torricellan custom, all who hope is the beginning of a “Renaissance” of the village, that the good Tiziano Teti had resuscitated – and he stood out from the teams of youths as he accompanied them whilst they were running and dragging their bundles. There is probably also a link with San Martino (11th November) which traditionally is celebrated as a peasant festival (a festival of chestnuts, tasting the new wine and animal fairs) and it is also nicely linked to the “Feast of the Cuckold”. In many towns in Italy, they hold processions on the occasion of San Martino, which go to make a din beneath the houses of cuckolds, whether real or imaginary. See (below) this link for example to a village near Caserta where, having overcome their old scruples, the men dress up and decorate themselves with every type of horn, then thread their way joyfully through the village streets (it is time for Italian men to stop taking this business of the horns so seriously and recognise that… we are all a bit cuckolded!).

Finally, after numerous turns around the village’s streets by the various groups of youths, followed by a large number of citizens who braved the cold wind, the “cioccoli” were politely thrown into the dustbin lorries and then everyone went towards the Museum, where enormous platters of chestnuts had been prepared accompanied by abundant quantities of new wine  together with bruschette, cheese and sausages which were eaten in the large hall of the Museum. Prizes were given to the most original group (there were two boys dressed as grave-diggers who pulled a coffin!), for the noisiest and various others, and this all went on until very late. I am attaching several photos, which although not terribly clear, give a better idea than nothing at all!

Yesterday I chose to return home using the sea route and I stopped at Ortona to visit the Canadian War Cemetery. I think you know the story of the battle of Ortona, when, towards November 1943, the allied troops, who had come up through southern Italy with relative ease, became penned in, in the region of Ortona, where, due to the Germans’ strategy, and due to the extremely hard winter, the front stopped, giving rise to a very severe battle. After succeeding in crossing the River Moro, the Allies fought a house to house battle with the Germans, that led to destruction of 80% of the buildings, and there was a terrible loss of life (more than 1,400 Canadians, 300 Allies of various nationalities, over 1,000 civilians and several hundred Germans died). This single battle, tremendous and it would seem mostly pointless, is recalled now in a museum dedicated to this event. The fallen Allied Military rest in this cemetery, which is about 2 or 3 Km south of Ortona, near the sea and the River Moro.

It is a place that filled me with deep emotion and much sadness, but also paradoxically with a sense of peace. I was alone at lunchtime, on a Sunday filled with sunshine, in this simple yet solemn place, maintained like a piece of art; the hundreds of white tombstones set in radiating straight lines, with rose bushes and various plants at regular intervals. As you know, we [Italians] are used to our rather jumbled up cemeteries, full of vases, flowers, little candle-lights, with each tomb different from the next, and then all the photos…. There, out of 1,600 tombs, only one had a photo on one side, some headstones struck me particularly with the phrases family members had had engraved, and others struck me because they were for remains of unknown soldiers and so bore only a simple inscription saying, “A soldier of the Second World War – known unto God”.

My thoughts focused on these young men who had come to fight and die for our liberty, in a country about which perhaps many of them knew nothing… yet, due to one of those peculiar coincidences of History, only a few months earlier, our King had boarded his ship right there at the port of Ortona, ending his reign so shamefully. As King, he had not had the courage to oppose Fascism; when he fled, he totally abandoned his army, even though, under our law, he was its commander in chief.
